In the bustling Makati Central Business District, a remarkable transformation has taken place over the past year. Once a thoroughfare dominated by the constant hum of vehicles, has been reclaimed as a vibrant, car-free haven, inspiring active movement and fostering a sense of community. The first Car-Free Sundays initiative in the Philippines, launched in September 2023, has not only captured the imagination of the local populace but has also become a model for similar activities across the country.
On its one-year anniversary, September 15, Car-Free Sundays saw a turnout of over 21,000 people. The event was hosted by the TV host, triathlete, and environmentalist, Paolo Abrera. To commence the opening, Chrissy Roa, Ayala Land's Corporate and Estates Marketing and Communications Group Head delivered a message, “The Car-Free Sundays is for everyone. It represents different groups, diverse sets
of people, so it's not just for the hardcore athletes, it's for everyone. Whatever stage of fitness or wellness you are in, you're all welcome here.”
The appeal of Car-Free Sundays extends far beyond the boundaries of age, fitness level, or lifestyle. It has managed to captivate a diverse crowd, from hardcore triathletes training for marathons to families enjoying leisurely strolls, friends bonding over shared experiences, and pet owners walking their beloved furry companions. This inclusive atmosphere has fostered a sense of community and a shared appreciation for the weekend urban environment.
The gun start was graced by Olympic Pole Vaulter EJ Obiena and Ayala Land Brand Experience and Brand Strategy for Corporate, Estates and Residential Head Hans Lopez-Vito. Obiena expressed his appreciation for Ayala Land's advocacy in promoting a healthy lifestyle and wellness. He mentioned that these initiatives are in line with his own beliefs as an athlete. "Have space, enjoy life, really be active and stay healthy because that way, you can be the best version of yourself. I'm happy that Ayala Land is doing this, and I'm honored to be part of it," he said.
The Car-Free Sundays is also filled with variety of pocket activities throughout the gardens and driveway at Ayala Triangle Gardens such as the Jump Rope Workouts by Jump Manila, Yoga at the Park by Movement in Play, EKIN Sessions and Shoe Trials by Nike Run Club, Threshold Workouts by Samsung Galaxy Run Club, Pet Obstacle Course hosted by the Puppy Playcare Center, and Push Bike Race hosted by the National Bicycle Organization.
Pioneering a Car-Free Revolution
The idea behind Car-Free Sundays at Ayala Avenue was born out of a collaborative effort between Ayala Land, the Makati Commercial Estate Association (MACEA), and the local government of Makati.
Recognizing the need to prioritize sustainable urban development and promote healthy lifestyles, these key organizations came together to transform one of the country's busiest thoroughfares into a pedestrian-friendly oasis.
The first Car Free Sunday at Ayala Avenue in September 2023 was a success, attracting over 12,000 attendees. This initial turnout was a clear indication of the community's enthusiasm for the event and their desire to reclaim the streets for active, sustainable living. This year, the popularity of Car-Free Sundays continued to soar. The event doubled in attendance, with 19,000 individuals participating each Sunday. This growth underscores the profound impact the initiative has had on the community, transforming Ayala
Avenue into a hub of activity, wellness, and engagement.
The success of Car-Free Sundays at Ayala Avenue has not gone unnoticed, and the initiative has since inspired similar endeavors in other urban landscapes across the Philippines. Ayala Land's estate in Cebu, as well as the cities of Manila and Quezon City, have all adopted their own versions of car-free events, further expanding the reach and impact of this transformative concept.
Ayala Land's Vision for Sustainable Living, More Connected Future
As the leading and largest real estate developer in the Philippines, Ayala Land has long been committed to creating communities that prioritize environmental sustainability and the well-being of its residents. The Car-Free Sundays initiative at Ayala Avenue was a natural extension of this vision, as the company sought to create a space that would encourage active movement, foster social interaction, and enhance the overall lives of the communities.
The story of Car-Free Sundays at Ayala Avenue is one of transformation, community, and a shared vision for a healthier, more sustainable future. In just one year, this pioneering initiative has not only captivated the hearts and minds of Makati residents but has also sparked a nationwide movement towards more livable and active urban environments.
